Organ donation awareness program in Mysuru from July 30

Mysuru: With an objective to save precious lives and create awareness about organ donation, Confederation of Indian Industry-Yi in association with JSS Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital and Narayana Multi Speciality Hospital will hold various awareness programs from July 30. During the campaign which was conducted in Bengaluru, more than 70 percent of people are willing to donate organs but they are not much aware about the procedural aspects. The main event is scheduled on August 7 at JSS Hospital.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday Dr MD Ravi, Event Chair, Organ Donation Campaign & Director, JSS Hospital said, “Across Karnataka more than 4000 people have registered for want of kidney and other organs. There are people who are waiting from more than 10 years. Due to lack of awareness programmes, people are not coming forward to donate organs. Keeping this in mind we have come forward to create awareness not only public but also among doctors.” He also mentioned that more than 2 lakh people are dying in the country due to kidney related problems.

Every year over 10 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness and await transplants, 50K people die from heart related diseases, 2 lakh people die because of liver diseases, 1.5 lakh people wait for a kidney transplant and 5 lakh people across the country die because of non-availability of organs. At an average, one person dies every minute in the country. To confirm a person is brain dead, two sets of confirmatory tests are performed independently by four different doctors. As of now most donated organs come from people in an ICU who are on ventilator and declared brain dead by doctors.

Muthukumar, Chairman, CII said, “To create awareness about organ donation we will be conducting Poster Competition among students on July 30. Over 200 students are expected to participate. The theme will be based on “Life… Pass it on & Gift a Life”. On July 31, Walkathon has been organized from Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple, Palace North Gate, Mysuru and 3K Run from Chamundi Vihar Stadium via Zoo. On August 7, awareness program for doctors on ‘Organ Transplant Implementation’ will be held at JSS Hospital between 3.30pm and 5pm. Panel discussion on Constrains in Organ Transplants, Practical difficulties in Brain Death identification and Counseling will be held. Later between 5pm and 7pm awareness program for Public will be held. On the occasion experts will be briefing public about various transplants, sharing of experience by the donor and the recipient. As part of the awareness program we are also going to schools, colleges and even industries. We would like to achieve over 10K registrations and make a impact over 3 lakh public about organ donation”.
