Mysuru: Even as India is racing towards attaining the status of “developed country” and reaching a more sophisticated and technologically advanced state, some of the age-old unconstitutional social stigmas seem internalized in the social fabric in some parts of the country.
Untouchability, for whose abolition Dr. B R Ambedkar fought and drafted the Indian Constitution, is surely disgraced by the inhumane act of the villagers of Tagadur village, by ostracising an economically backward family and imposing restrictions on them.
Tagadur village of Nanjangud taluk which comes under Varuna Constituency, from where former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra had won the Assembly elections with a good margin of votes, is now in the spotlight for wrong reasons.
Although these restrictions on the basis of untouchability are on two months, it has come to light only now.
The restrictions were imposed by the village heads and the priests.
The restrictions include
1. No collecting water from canals and tanks used by other villagers.
2. No purchasing of any commodities or groceries from the shops in the village.
3. No having food or water from any of the houses in the village.
Even those willing to help them were threatened with a fine of Rs 1101.
