Mysuru: Marking the 209th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the University of Mysore, Karnataka’s oldest university, will be producing textbooks in braille for its visually challenged students.

For now, these textbooks are to be introduced for students of BA and BSc for the upcoming academic year. The university also plans to roll out audio material for the visually impaired students.

The university is planning to finance this project with the funds received from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to the tune of Rs 1.5 Crore, under the “Drushti” scheme. This scheme looks to empower physically and visually challenged varsity level scholars.

The production of the textbooks will be based on demand, as the number of differently-abled students varies each year. The university will expand to other streams of study eventually.

The university is also considering providing a fee concession to the differently-abled, if not a complete fee waiver.
