Mysuru: For hands on experience for engineering students and to take up research in the subject, the engineering colleges should set up industrial institute interaction or install industrial labs, said Karisiddappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).

VTU VC calls on lecturers to be earnest during paper evaluation-1Speaking after inaugurating the “Conclave of Academic Administrators” organised by National Institute of Engineering for autonomous engineering colleges at a private hotel here on Thursday he said, “The industrial labs at the institute will help students to have firsthand experience and enhance their technical skills. Apart from this, the institute should also encourage students to take up research from sixth semester itself.”

“Even after students complete the course, the teachers should keep track of them for minimum four years. If possible they should come out with separate cell to keep track of their students. They should have updates like after completing the course what exactly the students are doing including whether they are working in the profession which they have chosen or into any administrative service. Apart from this, the institute should also keep track of their alumnus to make use of their valuable experience for the welfare of the students. The administrators and dean of the engineering colleges need to make teachers to understand the complex and situation of the students inside the classroom in the first three hours. The first hour of teaching determines the next three hours. Therefore teacher’s effort in the first hour is very crucial which will set the benchmark on that day. In the first year of engineering, students depend on classroom delivery and the materials which the teachers give to them. Students will be expecting more from the teachers. It will be a big challenge for the teachers to make them learn.”

Starting inter-disciplinary course:
VTU, which had earlier started inter disciplinary courses will be re-starting the same from coming academic year. The students will have option to take up other subjects apart from their regular ones in the third or final year. If they are into computer science, they can take a six-month course on other subjects including electronics and so on.

National Skill Development Centre:
“The National Skill Development Centre which is coming up at Dandelli in Karwar District will be inaugurated in the month of March,” added Karisiddappa. It would create a dynamic learning platform that will significantly benefit students with its innovative training strategies and cost effective technological advancements.

During the one-day conclave, representatives from 14 different autonomous engineering colleges were present. The representatives from each college presented their best practices especially in the technical field. The best practices will be shortlisted and later presented to VTU. Karisiddappa too assured to implement some of the best practices in the engineering colleges. More than 50 representatives from nearly 14 autonomous engineering colleges attended the conclave.

G L Shekar, Principal, NIE; Shakeeb-Ur-Rehman, Executive Council member, VTU and G S Suresh, Dean, NIE were also present.
