A Grassroots Initiative Bringing Ambedkar’s Ideals to Every Home
In the villages of Raichur district, Karnataka, a quiet yet impactful movement, Mane Manege Ambedkar (Ambedkar in Every Home), is transforming how people engage with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s philosophy. With modest setups featuring plastic mats, simple banners, and a portrait of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the initiative fosters intimate gatherings that are resonating with women, children, and marginalized communities.
A Shift in Focus
Traditionally, Dalit movements and celebrations have been male-dominated and public events. This initiative, launched on January 26, 2022, breaks that mold by emphasizing inclusivity, particularly encouraging women and children to engage with Ambedkar’s ideas.
“Ambedkar should reach women as well. The power of his thoughts enables the growth of women as leaders,” says Rupa Srinivasa Nayak, a farmer leader from Raichur.
Key Features of the Programme
- Frequency: Weekly gatherings, held between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM at homes, colonies, or open spaces.
- Format:
- An elder inaugurates the session.
- Speakers range from local organizers to subject experts.
- A memento of Dr. Ambedkar is gifted to the speaker.
- Informal discussions without rigid protocols.
- Milestones: The initiative celebrated its 100th programme on November 10, 2024, with writer Kotiganahalli Ramaiah as the chief guest.
Leadership and Vision
The programme is spearheaded by the Bahujan Sangharsha Samiti, led by activists J. Sharanappa Ballatagi, M.R. Bheri, Shivappa Nayak, and Modin Saab. Initially started to spread awareness on Buddhist teachings (dhamma dipa), the Samiti expanded its focus to include Ambedkar’s message, aiming to transcend caste and religious boundaries.
“We faced opposition from political parties and Dalit organizations initially, but they now appreciate our efforts,” says Sharanappa Ballatagi.
Inclusive Appeal
The movement has gained traction not only among Dalits and Other Backward Communities but also among Muslim families. Modin, a teacher from Sirwar taluk, organized an event at his home, inspiring others to follow suit.
“Ambedkar is not limited to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He belongs to everyone. Holding these discussions at home has a positive effect on children,” he observes.
Grassroots Meets Global
While intellectuals like Suraj Yengde, Anand Teltumbde, and Christophe Jaffrelot promote Ambedkar’s legacy on the global stage, Mane Manege Ambedkar serves as a grassroots effort to embed his teachings in everyday lives.
Future Goals
The Bahujan Sangharsha Samiti aims to expand the initiative across Karnataka, bridging communities and fostering dialogue around Ambedkar’s ideals of social justice, equality, and education.
Conclusion
By creating spaces for thoughtful discussions and involving diverse communities, Mane Manege Ambedkar exemplifies how grassroots movements can drive social transformation. It ensures that Ambedkar’s vision continues to inspire generations at home and beyond.
