Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja added another milestone to his illustrious career as he surpassed former captain MS Dhoni to become the fourth-highest six-hitter for India in Test cricket. The achievement came during the first Test against West Indies at Ahmedabad, where Jadeja’s attacking display helped India consolidate their lead.

Jadeja overtakes Dhoni

On day two of the match, Jadeja scored an unbeaten 50 runs off 81 balls, decorated with three fours and four sixes. All his sixes came against spinner Jomel Warrican, taking his career tally to 79 sixes in 86 Tests. This helped him move past Dhoni’s tally of 78 sixes in 90 Tests.

Currently, the only Indian batters ahead of him on the six-hitting charts are Rohit Sharma with 88 sixes in 67 Tests, Virender Sehwag with 90 in 103 Tests, and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant with 90 in 47 Tests.

Strong form in 2025

This year has been remarkable for Jadeja with the bat. His fifty against the West Indies was his seventh 50-plus score in Tests this year, the highest by any batter. In seven Tests and 13 innings so far in 2025, Jadeja has scored 605 runs at a staggering average of 75.62, including one century and six half-centuries. His best knock of the year remains an unbeaten 107.

With this innings, Jadeja has also inched closer to the 4,000-run mark in Test cricket. He currently has 3,936 runs in 86 Tests and 129 innings at an average of 38.21, with five centuries and 28 fifties. His highest score remains 175 not out.

Partnership with Jurel boosts India

At the end of the second session on day two, India stood at 326/4 with Jadeja and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel (68*) unbeaten at the crease. Earlier, KL Rahul notched up a patient 100 off 197 deliveries before falling to Jomel Warrican.

The Jadeja-Jurel partnership proved crucial, adding 100 runs off 151 balls. The duo’s counterattack began in the 71st and 72nd overs when they struck three sixes in quick succession. Jadeja repeatedly charged down the track against Warrican, hitting him for all his four sixes, while Jurel also played aggressively against Roston Chase and Warrican.

India crossed the 300-run mark in the 87th over and their lead swelled beyond 100 shortly after. By tea, Jadeja had completed his 28th Test half-century in 75 balls.

India in commanding position

India had earlier bundled out West Indies for 162 runs in their first innings, with Mohammed Siraj starring with figures of 4/40. In reply, India began strongly, courtesy of Rahul’s century and steady contributions from the middle order.

At tea on day two, India were firmly in control with a lead of 164 runs and six wickets in hand. With Jadeja and Jurel settled at the crease, the hosts looked poised to build a commanding total and press home their advantage.

Conclusion

Jadeja’s milestone of surpassing Dhoni highlights his evolution as one of India’s most reliable Test performers. With consistency in both batting and bowling, he continues to play a pivotal role in India’s dominance at home. As he nears the 4,000-run mark, Jadeja’s stature as a premier all-rounder in world cricket grows stronger.
