Shivamogga: Timely intervention prevents tragedy at Jog Falls
Jog Falls in Shivamogga district, usually bustling with tourists on festival days, witnessed a life-saving act on August 27 when a Bengaluru businessman was rescued from an attempt to die by suicide. The intervention of an autorickshaw driver and a police officer prevented what could have been a tragic incident at one of Karnataka’s most visited tourist destinations.
The episode unfolded in the morning when Shoaib Mohammed, an autorickshaw driver ferrying visitors to various viewpoints, noticed something unusual about a lone passenger. Carrying a small bag, the passenger asked Shoaib which points around the falls were the most dangerous and located at a height. The unusual request immediately raised suspicion.
Suspicious questions lead to police alert
Sensing that the man was in distress and possibly contemplating suicide, Shoaib alerted HN Nagaraj, a sub-inspector from Kargal police station, who was patrolling nearby. “Years of policing have taught us that words sometimes reveal what people are unable to hide. This man’s demand for a dangerous spot itself explained his motive,” Nagaraj said.
The passenger, identified as Rajan (name changed), a 40-year-old businessman from Bengaluru, was escorted to the police station. Initially reluctant to open up, he later confessed after being offered coffee and a patient ear.
Business losses and personal struggles
Rajan revealed that he once ran an apparel shop in Chickpet but had suffered heavy financial losses. With debts amounting to ₹30 lakh, medical expenses for his aged parents, and a recent divorce, his situation worsened.
“I panicked and left home around 20 days ago. I slept in bus stands and railway stations, and ate from roadside stalls. Finally, I decided to end my life at Jog Falls, as I heard it had many suicide points,” Rajan told the officer.
A conversation that changed a life
Sub-inspector Nagaraj consoled Rajan, reminding him of his responsibilities towards his parents. “Have you thought about what will happen to your parents if you die? Who will look after them?” he asked. Rajan, visibly moved, shared his mother’s contact number.
When Nagaraj called her, she broke down and pleaded with her son to return home. The emotional conversation helped calm Rajan, who agreed to go back to Bengaluru.
Safe return home
The police provided Rajan with ₹2,000 for his journey and escorted him to the bus stand. Without his knowledge, Nagaraj also alerted the bus driver and conductor to ensure he reached Bengaluru safely without alighting midway.
Later that night, Rajan called Nagaraj to confirm that he had reached home, followed by a call from his mother, who expressed gratitude to the officer for saving her son’s life.
Conclusion
The incident at Jog Falls highlights the importance of vigilance and empathy in preventing suicides. The timely action of an autorickshaw driver and the compassionate intervention of a police officer not only saved a life but also reunited a distressed man with his family. Authorities have urged citizens to remain observant and report signs of distress in public spaces.
