Tumakuru Farmer Sentenced to Life for Killing Brother, Attacking Father
Tumakuru: The district sessions court on Friday sentenced a 33-year-old farmer, Mohan, to life imprisonment for killing his younger brother and attempting to murder his father in a domestic dispute. The incident occurred at their home in Hosakere in May 2021.
Mohan, the third son of Mallappa, 70, a farmer, reportedly had a troubled marital life. His wife, after frequent quarrels, filed a domestic violence case against the family, which caused friction between Mohan and his parents. Upset over the situation, Mohan often blamed his parents and fought with them.
His younger brother, Umesh, 26, defended their parents, leading to heated confrontations with Mohan. On May 2, 2021, an enraged Mohan attacked Umesh with a chopper while he was asleep, killing him instantly. When Mallappa tried to intervene, Mohan attempted to strangle him and staged it as a suicide attempt.
At the time, other family members, including Mohan’s wife and youngest sister, were visiting relatives. Mallappa managed to escape and raised an alarm, prompting neighbors to rush to his aid. Mohan fled the scene, leaving Umesh dead in a pool of blood.
Chelur police arrived shortly after and registered cases of murder and attempted murder based on Mallappa’s statement. Mohan was tracked down, arrested, and a charge sheet was filed.
The court’s verdict has brought closure to a gruesome case of domestic violence that rocked the village.
