Udupi: Authorities seized over 270 kg of Anna Bhagya scheme rice that was allegedly being transported illegally in an autorickshaw at Padukere, Manuru village, on Wednesday. The rice, meant for ration cardholders under the state government’s scheme, was found being diverted without a licence.

Raid following tip-off

According to police, the raid was conducted after V. Vasanth Kumar, 48, food inspector of Brahmavar, received credible information regarding the illegal movement of Anna Bhagya rice. Acting on the tip-off, Kumar, along with police personnel and staff, intercepted an autorickshaw at Padukere.

On inspection, officials found seven bags containing 274.3 kg of priority and Antyodaya rice meant for public distribution cardholders.

Accused identified

The autorickshaw driver was identified as Rajesh, a resident of Kotatattu village in Brahmavar. Both the rice stock and the vehicle were seized during the operation.

Case registered

Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Kota police station under:

  • Sections 3, 5, 6(A), and 7 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955

  • Sections 3(2) and 18(1) of the Karnataka Essential Commodities (Public Distribution System) Public Control Order, 2016

  • Police confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether larger networks are involved in the illegal diversion of Anna Bhagya rice.
