Udupi: Young Yakshagana performers must pursue artistic excellence while honoring the integrity and spiritual roots of this traditional theatre form, urged Dr. G. Bhimeshwar Joshi, Dharmadarshi of Horanadu Sri Annapoorneshwari Temple.

Presiding over an award ceremony organized by Yakshagana Kalaranga at the IYC Auditorium in Udupi, Dr. Joshi emphasized that while achievements are commendable, deviation from core values for fame or commercial success must be resisted. He warned against reducing Yakshagana to mere entertainment or adapting it for cinematic appeal, stressing, “This art should not be diluted for applause or material gain.”

Dr. Joshi expressed concern over declining standards and urged youth to remain grounded in Yakshagana’s ideals, preserving its authentic rhythm, narrative, and philosophy.

At the ceremony:

  • Dr. G.L. Hegde Kumta, a veteran of Talamaddale, received the Matti Muralidhar Rao Award.

  • Sarpangala Ishwara Bhat, a senior tambourine artist, was honored with the Perla Krishna Bhat Award.

  • Distinguished guests included senior leader Krishna Prasad Adyantaya and Kalaranga Vice President S.V. Bhat.
President M. Gangadhar Rao welcomed the audience, Narayan Hegde introduced the awardees, and Secretary Murali Kadekar conducted the proceedings.

The event served as a reminder that Yakshagana is not just a performance—but a cultural responsibility.
