A swift police operation in Udupi district led to the arrest of three men involved in a violent chain snatching incident targeting a 70-year-old woman.

The arrested suspects — Gourish Rohidas Kerkar (37), Mainuddin Bagalkot (31), and Surjeet Gautam Kar (27) — were tracked down in Yellapur, Uttara Kannada district. The victim, Padma from Varamballi village, had filed a complaint after being attacked outside her home while plucking flowers on April 26.

According to her account, a white car approached her. One man, clad in a saffron T-shirt, got down while the others stayed inside, moving a short distance before halting at the roadside. As Padma turned to investigate a noise, the assailant struck her on the head, causing her to fall. He then dragged her along the road, hit her on the face, and ripped off her gold karimani chain, weighing about 40 grams and valued at around ₹2.5 lakh, before escaping.

Padma sustained bleeding injuries to her lip and face, along with head trauma. Based on her report, a case was registered under Sections 309(4) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Brahmavar Police Station.

Acting swiftly, a special team under CPI Gopikrishna KR, in coordination with Uttara Kannada police, arrested the trio and recovered the white car worth ₹10 lakh used in the crime. The accused have been presented before the court.
