Udupi DC Takes Action to Ease Traffic Congestion and Improve Road Safety
Udupi: Traffic congestion on major roads within the Udupi Municipality limits is rapidly escalating, causing major disruptions in vehicle movement. To address this growing concern, Udupi’s Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Vidyakumari, has called for immediate action to resolve these issues.
During a road safety committee meeting at the Rajathadri DC office in Manipal, Dr. Vidyakumari identified several key challenges contributing to the traffic bottlenecks, including commercial buildings lacking proper parking spaces, unauthorized warehouses, and street vendors obstructing roadways.
It was noted that over 58 commercial buildings in Udupi city had owners and customers parking vehicles on the roads, creating significant traffic disruptions. Many of these buildings were constructed without complying with parking regulations, despite obtaining municipal approval. The DC directed officials to issue notices to building owners, ensuring the provision of adequate parking facilities on-site.
Furthermore, Dr. Vidyakumari highlighted the problem posed by unauthorized warehouses and street vendors, particularly near the city’s service bus stand and Board High School area. She instructed municipal and police officials to take immediate action to clear these obstructions.
The police department has also recommended the suspension of driving licenses for 82 individuals involved in fatal accidents. So far, 59 licenses have been revoked, with the remaining 23 to be canceled within a week.
For national highways in the district, temporary safety measures have been implemented at accident-prone areas, with permanent safety improvements underway. The DC also stressed the importance of scientifically designed warning boards, zebra crossings, and speed breakers near schools along highways.
Dr. Vidyakumari further recommended compensation for victims of 20 hit-and-run cases from 2023 and 2024 under the Solatium Scheme, urging the General Insurance Company to expedite the approval of these claims.
The meeting was attended by district superintendent of police Dr. Arun K, executive engineer Kiran S, NHAI project director Abdullah Mohammed Azmi, and other key officials.
