A suspected abduction case in Udupi has ignited tensions, as Jeena Maril, a Christian woman from Kodavoor, is alleged to have been kidnapped by Mohammed Akram from Karamballi. Her parents, Merus Pusphalatha and Godwin, have lodged a police complaint claiming their daughter was forcibly taken.

Conflicting Claims

Reports suggest that Jeena and Akram were in a relationship for years and had planned to register their marriage. However, her parents allege that Akram abducted her as an act of revenge. In distress, they have filed a habeas corpus petition in the Karnataka High Court, but the hearing was postponed. Meanwhile, Jeena and Akram have sought police protection, insisting they are together by choice.

Family’s Allegations

Jeena’s parents previously filed a POCSO case against Akram, alleging he harassed her since she was a minor, but it was dismissed due to lack of evidence. They further claim he manipulated her online, took inappropriate images, and threatened to leak them. The family also alleges his ties to the ‘Garuda Gang’, drug addiction, and lack of a stable job.

Legal Standpoint

The police, however, have stated that both individuals are adults, and no legal action can be taken unless Jeena reports coercion. The family now demands that Jeena be presented before them at least once. Meanwhile, Akram has applied for anticipatory bail.
