Udupi has launched a new campaign titled ‘Our Toilet, Our Pride’, which will run until December 10 to strengthen the district’s open defecation-free status. Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari announced that this initiative is crucial for promoting better sanitation and hygiene across the region.
Speaking at the District Water Supply and Sanitation Mission Committee meeting on Tuesday, as part of the World Toilet Day celebrations, Vidyakumari highlighted the importance of raising awareness about safe sanitation practices in rural areas. She emphasized that World Toilet Day, observed annually on November 19, encourages the consistent use of toilets, promoting cleanliness and hygiene.
This year’s campaign focuses on encouraging both individual and community toilet use while ensuring their long-term sustainability. The initiative includes beautifying toilets with artwork, repairing non-functional facilities, and ensuring all toilets are safe and operational. Additionally, activities will be organized to inspire behavioral changes and promote better sanitation practices across the region.
To recognize outstanding efforts, awards will be given to the five best household toilets and five best community toilets, selected by the respective taluk panchayats.
Vidyakumari urged gram panchayat leaders and school authorities to raise awareness about the importance of toilets and proper sanitation. She also stressed the need for child-friendly school toilets and the installation of washbasins to educate students on good hygiene practices. A comprehensive survey of toilet usage across taluks and panchayats will be conducted, and special camps will be organized for sanitation workers to further the campaign’s impact.
