To uphold public order, avert mishaps, and deter rash driving, Udupi city and Manipal police have introduced strict precautionary measures, including intensified night patrols.
Following frequent reports of thefts, drunken driving, and public harassment, authorities have increased early surveillance—particularly with schools and colleges reopening—to keep a closer watch on student activities.
Early Closures for Shops and Bars
Within Manipal limits, all shops and business outlets must shut by 10 pm. In Udupi and nearby areas, the deadline ranges from 10:30 to 11 pm. Establishments violating this rule face warnings, followed by legal action. Liquor outlets must close by 10:30 pm, bars by 11:30 pm, while clubs, star hotels, and lodges must cease operations by midnight. Late-night roadside drinking, gambling, and suspicious loitering are also being targeted.
Checkposts and Continuous Patrolling
On weekends, multiple checkpoints are set up to detect intoxicated drivers and penalise speed offenders. Constant night patrols are active in Manipal at Perampalli, KoiN Circle, MIT, Eshwar Nagar, and Alevoor Road, and in Udupi at Clock Tower and major bus stands.
Road Safety Awareness
Promoting helmet use, police launched a poster featuring “Ravi Anna” and “Bhanu” from the film Su From So, riding a scooter with helmets, captioned: Wear a helmet like Ravi Anna – Your safety is our right.
Public Participation Encouraged
District SP Hariram Shankar urged citizens to promptly report issues via the police control room, assuring swift response.
