Udupi: Ravi Katpady and his team, Ravi Friends Katpady, have announced that they will not be presenting their much-anticipated tableau during Krishna Janmashtami 2025, citing health concerns. The announcement comes as a disappointment to the people of Udupi, who have eagerly awaited his creative performances each year.
A decade-long journey of creativity and charity
Ravi Katpady, a native of Udupi, has spent the past 10 years dressing up in elaborate, Hollywood-inspired costumes during Krishna Janmashtami, using his creativity to raise funds for underprivileged children. Over the years, he has raised Rs 1.72 crore, helping 182 children receive medical treatments they could not afford.
His journey began with a Spider-Man costume, and each year, his innovative portrayals became the highlight of the city’s festival celebrations. In 2024, he collaborated with Ashik Anchan to bring to life a character from Avatar 2, captivating audiences and continuing his mission of charity.
Ravi’s efforts have been recognised nationally. He earned the title of Karamveer on a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) alongside Pabiben Rabari, donating the entire prize amount of Rs 25 lakh to fund a child’s treatment.
Dedication despite challenges
Ravi is known not just for his creativity, but for the physical and mental endurance required for his performances. He often fasts for three days, manages without proper facilities, and survives solely on water while performing in challenging costumes. His commitment to social causes and creativity has made him a symbol of philanthropy and innovation in Udupi.
Health concerns lead to temporary pause
Due to his current health condition, Ravi has decided to step back from this year’s Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. “I sincerely apologise that this year I will not be donning any character, as my doctors have advised me to take rest due to health issues,” he said.
Ravi also cautioned the public against fraudulent fundraising. “Neither I nor my team will be collecting any funds this year. If anyone approaches you for donations in our name, please be cautious,” he added.
Community reaction and legacy
For a decade, Ravi’s tableau has been a beloved tradition in Udupi, combining entertainment with a meaningful social impact. His initiative has inspired people across India and abroad to contribute to charitable causes, turning the Krishna Janmashtami festival into a platform for creativity and philanthropy.
While 2025 will see a temporary pause, Ravi Katpady’s decade-long dedication to underprivileged children and his creative tableaux leave a lasting legacy in Udupi, reflecting the power of art and community service.
