Udupi: Udupi lost one of its most respected consumer rights advocates as Alevur Padmanabha Kodancha (89), senior trustee of the Udupi Consumer Forum, passed away on August 31 at his daughter’s residence in Kollegala.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. The family has been receiving condolences from several organisations and well-wishers, acknowledging his immense contribution to consumer welfare.

Long banking career and service to society

Kodancha had a distinguished career at Corporation Bank, where he worked for nearly 39 years, retiring as General Manager. After his retirement, instead of opting for a quiet life, he committed himself to public service through the Udupi Consumer Forum.

Over the next three decades, he became a guiding force for thousands of distressed consumers, helping them resolve disputes with clarity and fairness. His expertise in financial and consumer matters made him a highly sought-after advisor.

Spreading awareness through writings and media

One of his significant contributions was his effort to educate the public on consumer rights. Kodancha organised workshops and seminars and authored consumer-awareness booklets that were widely distributed in Udupi and beyond.

For more than a decade, he penned a widely read Q&A column on consumer issues in the forum’s publication, simplifying legal complexities for ordinary citizens.

He was also featured in a consumer awareness programme on Doordarshan, where he shared insights on protecting consumer interests and understanding legal remedies available under the Consumer Protection Act.

Recognition and community involvement

Kodancha’s work extended beyond consumer rights. He actively contributed to the Senior Citizens’ Forum, Postal Advisory Committee, and Pavan Parishat, highlighting his diverse social interests.

In recognition of his decades of service, he was honoured with the Sevabhooshana award by Udupi Yakshagana Kalaranga in February 2025 – a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to empowering people and serving society.

Tributes and condolences

The Udupi Consumer Forum expressed deep sorrow at his passing, recalling his tireless efforts to promote transparency, fairness, and awareness in consumer matters.

“His vision transformed the way consumer issues were understood in Udupi. He was more than a trustee; he was a mentor to all of us,” a senior forum member said.

Legacy of service

Kodancha’s life is an inspiring example of how professional expertise can be used for social good. His commitment ensured that countless citizens were equipped to protect their rights and seek justice.
