Murudeshwar: An eight-year-old boy from Bengaluru was tragically swept away by strong waves on Monday morning at Murudeshwar beach in Uttara Kannada district, police said.
Incident details
The child, identified as Kritik Reddy, a resident of Bidarahalli, had come to Murudeshwar with his parents and extended family for a holiday. The family checked into a hotel on Sunday and visited the Murudeshwar temple for darshan before heading to the beach on Monday to play and take a dip in the sea.
According to police, Kritik strayed from the group and waded into deeper waters, where a powerful wave dragged him into the sea.
Rescue attempts
Kritik’s relative, K. Vasantha, rushed to save him but was also swept by the strong currents. Locals on the beach managed to rescue Vasantha, who was given first aid and shifted to a hospital. Despite immediate efforts, the child could not be saved.
Police investigation
Murudeshwar Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining the circumstances and ensuring safety measures are reinforced at the beach.
The beach, which had been closed during the monsoon due to rough seas, was recently reopened to the public. However, water sports remain banned, and warning boards advising visitors not to enter the water are still displayed at the site, according to local residents.
Safety concerns
Officials have urged tourists to exercise caution while visiting coastal areas, particularly during the monsoon season or when waves are strong. Despite restrictions and warning signs, accidents continue to occur, highlighting the need for increased vigilance by visitors and authorities alike.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Kritik Reddy underscores the dangers of venturing into the sea, even at popular tourist destinations. Authorities continue to stress the importance of adhering to safety warnings and supervising children at all times while near water bodies.
