Tragedy struck Rudrabeedu village near Gonikoppal on Tuesday when a wild elephant attack left one man dead and another injured.
The identity of the deceased, believed to be around 45 years old, is yet to be confirmed. The injured man, identified as 40-year-old Ajesh, sustained wounds after being attacked while riding his bicycle. He managed to survive and has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Range Forest Officer (RFO) Gangadharappa confirmed the sequence of events. According to him, the elephant first charged at Ajesh, injuring him. It then turned its attention to a pedestrian nearby, who unfortunately succumbed to the attack on the spot.
The forest official added that three wild elephants were spotted in the area. Forest personnel have now launched a drive to push the animals back into the nearby woods to prevent further danger to residents.
The incident has sparked concern among villagers, many of whom are fearful of venturing out, especially during early mornings and evenings.
Forest officials are urging locals to remain alert and report any further elephant sightings immediately.
