In a landmark surgical achievement, Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has successfully removed an 8-kilogram uterine fibroid from a 52-year-old woman, marking one of the largest fibroid removals recorded in coastal Karnataka. The rare and complex procedure, carried out on July 15, has earned the hospital accolades for both surgical expertise and compassionate care.

A life-altering diagnosis and surgery

The patient had been suffering for years from heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal bloating, and postural imbalance. After a thorough evaluation, doctors diagnosed her with a massive 20 cm uterine fibroid. “The tumour had grown so large it altered her gait and caused pressure symptoms,” explained Dr Joylene D’Almeida, a member of the surgical team.

Led by Dr Sujaya V Rao, the surgical team included Dr Joylene D’Almeida, Dr Ektha Shetty, Dr Vismaya K, Dr Diya M, and Dr Nayana F from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Given the patient’s age and symptoms, a hysterectomy with oophorectomy was performed to ensure long-term health and reduce recurrence risk.

A fibroid the size of a newborn

The extracted fibroid was so large it nearly filled a 20-litre surgical bucket and weighed around 8 kilograms—equivalent to a newborn child. “Seeing it outside the body really brought home how much her body was enduring,” said Dr Ektha Shetty.

Such large fibroids are rare, especially in postmenopausal women. They are often accompanied by significant complications, including pressure on vital organs, distortion of normal anatomy, and heavy blood supply. “This surgery required meticulous planning to ensure complete removal without damage to nearby organs,” said Dr Vismaya.

The patient is now stable, recovering well, and expected to be discharged shortly.

A team effort with clinical precision

The successful outcome was made possible by coordinated teamwork across departments. The anaesthesia team—Dr Karl R, Dr Shamana Shetty, and Dr Vidyashree—played a crucial role in managing intraoperative challenges. The surgical nurses and support staff ensured seamless execution of the procedure.

Support and encouragement from leadership were also acknowledged. The team thanked Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), Dr Antony Sylvan, Dean of FMMCH, and Dr Deepa K, Head of the Department of OBGYN, for their unwavering support.

Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira and Dr Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent, lauded the surgical team for its empathetic and expert approach. “This achievement is a reflection of the institution’s commitment to advanced, compassionate care,” said Fr Sequeira.

Raising awareness on women’s health

The doctors urged women to seek timely care for reproductive health symptoms such as heavy bleeding, abdominal pain, or swelling. “Fibroids are often treatable if detected early. Delaying care can lead to serious complications,” said Dr Diya M.

Father Muller Medical College Hospital continues to be a leading centre for advanced gynecological procedures in the region, upholding its motto to “Heal and Comfort” through expert and empathetic care.
