Mangaluru: A final-year BCA student was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by a group of youths near a private college canteen at Ballalbagh on Saturday, October 3.
The injured student has been identified as Mohammed Unais, 20, a final-year BCA student at a private college in Mangaluru and a resident of Mittabagilu village in Beltangady. Police have named Riyan, a first-year BCom student of the same college and a resident of Katipalla, as the prime accused. Five other unidentified youths are also named in the complaint.
Altercation began during Kabaddi game
According to the FIR, the incident began around 11.30 am when Unais went to play Kabaddi at the City Arena turf.
While there, he allegedly noticed a fight taking place on the road opposite the turf involving his friend Raayiz and Riyan. Unais and some other students reportedly intervened in an attempt to stop the altercation.
The FIR states that Riyan allegedly struck Unais with his hands during the confrontation. The situation subsequently appeared to have subsided, but another confrontation took place later in the day.
Group allegedly attacked student near canteen
At around 1.45 pm, Unais and his friends were standing near the college canteen when Riyan allegedly arrived at the location along with five associates on two two-wheelers.
According to the complaint, the group surrounded Unais and threatened to kill him before allegedly launching an attack.
The assailants allegedly used a knife during the assault, causing injuries to Unais’s head, back, left ear and other parts of his body. The attack resulted in severe bleeding injuries, according to the complaint.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, including the role of each of the accused, are being investigated by the police.
Injured student shifted to Wenlock Hospital
Following the attack, Unais was rushed to Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for emergency medical treatment.
Details regarding the student’s current condition were not immediately available in the information provided.
The incident has caused concern among students and the college community, particularly as the alleged attack took place near the college canteen during the afternoon.
Barke police register case
Based on the complaint filed by Unais, Barke police registered a case under Crime No. 88/2026.
The accused have been booked under Sections 109, 118(1), 115(2), 189(2), 189(4) and 191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police are investigating the case and are working to establish the sequence of events leading to the alleged assault. The involvement of the five unidentified individuals and the circumstances that led to the escalation of the earlier altercation are also expected to form part of the investigation.
Investigation underway
The case follows what police describe through the FIR as a dispute that began earlier in the day and later escalated into an alleged group assault involving a knife.
As the investigation continues, police are expected to gather statements from the injured student, his friends and other witnesses, besides examining available evidence to determine the circumstances of the incident.
The allegations against the accused are yet to be established in court.
