In an industry where aviation safety has long been male-dominated, Shefali Mhaldar, a civil engineer from NIT Goa, is challenging the norm—one runway test at a time. Though aviation was not part of her initial career plans, fate led her into a high-stakes field where precision and technical expertise are vital.

Shefali joined Adani Airport Holdings Ltd in 2023 through campus placement and now plays a crucial role at Mangaluru International Airport’s engineering and maintenance (E&M) team. Her primary responsibility includes conducting rigorous runway friction testing to ensure safe takeoffs and landings.

“Runway friction tests, conducted every 45 days, assess the runway’s grip and compliance with aviation safety regulations,” she explains. Operating the Airport Surface Friction Tester (ASFT) vehicle—which involves driving at 65 km/h to 95 km/h and applying sudden brakes—requires skill and composure. At Mangaluru’s tabletop airport, surrounded by valleys, this test is even more critical. Shefali is the first woman at the airport trained to operate the ASFT vehicle.

Beyond friction testing, she also oversees rubber deposit removal from runways and holds both LMV and HMV licenses, making her one of the few women in India qualified for these specialized tasks.

A problem solver at heart, Shefali developed a Python-based software to automate breath analyzer test selection for airside personnel, ensuring compliance with DGCA regulations. This innovation, which eliminates manual selection, earned recognition from aviation authorities.

Her excellence extends beyond aviation. A black belt in karate, a trained classical vocalist, and a Marathi theatre artist, she brings discipline and creativity to every aspect of life. An academic topper and Student of the Year awardee, Shefali continues to break barriers with passion and perseverance.
