Mangaluru: The Kankanady police have registered cases against 16 Instagram accounts for sharing highly provocative and inflammatory content allegedly aimed at disturbing communal harmony in the region. According to police sources, the accounts circulated posts that openly suggested revenge through murder and attempted to create fear among communities, triggering serious concern among law-enforcement authorities.
Officials stated that these posts, which spread rapidly across social media, were designed to incite communal sentiments and provoke hostility. The nature of the content, they said, was severe enough to warrant immediate legal action to prevent any potential unrest.
Surge in provocative posts after period of decline
Police sources noted that such inflammatory content had significantly reduced for some time due to strict monitoring and timely intervention by law-enforcement agencies. Regular surveillance of social media platforms had resulted in a noticeable drop in objectionable posts, contributing to a relatively calmer digital environment.
However, the recent rise in targeted provocative posts has forced the police to intensify their vigilance once again. Authorities believe that some individuals may be attempting to exploit social media platforms to spread misinformation, fear, and communal hatred.
Investigation underway
The police have initiated a detailed investigation into the 16 accounts involved. Technical teams are working to trace the individuals operating the accounts, and action will be taken as per the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
Officials emphasised that the department will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt peace in the region. They clarified that social media platforms are under constant watch and that similar actions will be taken against any individual or group found misusing digital spaces to create discord.
Warning issued to social media users
Authorities have appealed to the public to act responsibly online and refrain from sharing, forwarding, or engaging with unverified or provocative content. They urged citizens to report suspicious posts to the police instead of reacting to them, thereby helping maintain harmony.
The police reiterated that stringent measures will be enforced against anyone attempting to fuel communal tensions, stressing that preserving peace and stability in Mangaluru remains a top priority.
