With just a fortnight left for the monsoon to hit Dakshina Kannada, over a thousand government school classrooms across the district are in dire need of urgent repairs. The safety of students and teachers hangs in the balance as classrooms with leaky roofs, cracked walls, and unstable structures await attention.
In total, 1,302 classrooms have been flagged for immediate repair. Of these, 312 were damaged during the 2023–24 academic year, with repairs estimated at ₹6.5 crore. The district recently received funds for this batch, and work is set to begin shortly.
However, a new list submitted recently includes an additional 990 severely damaged classrooms needing an estimated ₹15.3 crore. The funding for these repairs is yet to be sanctioned. Heavy monsoons and recurring cyclones have been damaging school infrastructure year after year, making early repairs essential.
Most of the newly identified damaged classrooms fall under Puttur (210), Belthangady (209), and Bantwal (208) BEO limits. Sullia follows with 185, Mangaluru South with 102, Mangaluru North with 63, and Moodbidri with 13 classrooms in disrepair.
DDPI Govinda Madivala confirmed that the major structural concerns include roofs, walls, and even midday meal rooms. Some schools also reported damage to compound and retaining walls, though no funds are expected for those.
Teachers urge immediate action to ensure classes continue safely during the upcoming rainy season.
