Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district police have launched a series of legal actions after false messages and a misleading news article about an alleged “sword attack” went viral on social media and a news website, causing public alarm.

Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K revealed that a WhatsApp message shared in a group called Muslim Yuva Balaga by one Ziyad Ummi falsely claimed that two youths were attacked on Sajipa Deraje Road. The message, intended to provoke fear and unrest, led to a case being filed at Bantwal Rural Police Station under Section 240 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In a connected development, a Kannada news portal published a fabricated report with the headline, “Sword attack resurfaces in Dakshina Kannada district; two innocent Muslims attacked…” Police confirmed the article was entirely baseless. With court approval, a case was filed against the media outlet under Section 240 of the BNS.

A similar case was registered against a Facebook account named Muhammad Naushad, which shared false content relating to the same incident.

Further, an unlawful gathering of around 50 to 75 individuals near Deraje bus stand—believed to be a reaction to the viral misinformation—resulted in traffic disruption. Those involved have been booked under Sections 240, 285, 189(2), 191(2), and 190 of the BNS.

The misinformation began spreading after Mohammad Mukbul, 34, filed a complaint. He stated that while riding pillion near Deraje, two helmeted individuals appeared suspicious, but no weapon or attack occurred. The encounter was misrepresented online.

Police have issued strong warnings against spreading fake news, urging the public to verify facts and refrain from sharing unverified content.
