Bengaluru: The Jesuit community and St Joseph’s University (SJU) are mourning the passing of Fr Swebert D’Silva, SJ (68), Pro-Chancellor of the University, who died on 20 November 2025 at 1:15 p.m. following a massive cardiac arrest at St Philomena Hospital. His sudden demise has deeply saddened colleagues, students, alumni, and well-wishers across Karnataka.

A life of service and leadership
Fr Swebert was widely respected for his dedicated service to Jesuit education and for his leadership in various academic and administrative roles. At SJU, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the University’s academic mission, student support systems, and value-based institutional ethos. Colleagues remember him as a compassionate leader known for his humility and warmth.

Community expresses grief
In a message issued soon after his passing, the Vice Chancellor of St Joseph’s University offered heartfelt condolences and requested everyone to pray for the repose of his soul. Several members of the Jesuit community shared their tributes, acknowledging his steadfast commitment to education, social service, and pastoral care.

Funeral arrangements
The funeral will be held on Saturday, 22 November, at 3 p.m. at the University grounds in Bengaluru. The University has invited staff, students, and the wider community to join in prayer and honour his memory.
