Bantwal: A goods lorry carrying interlock cement blocks overturned after crashing into the compound of a house at Koppala in Tenkabellur village of Bantwal taluk late at night, causing extensive damage to the property and leaving the driver with minor injuries.
The accident occurred on the BC Road–Polali road when the lorry, loaded with interlock blocks, was travelling from the BC Road side. According to reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle, following which the lorry rammed into the compound of a house belonging to Jeffrey Fernandes before overturning.
The impact of the collision caused the interlock cement blocks loaded in the vehicle to fall onto the roof and courtyard of the house. Several portions of the property were damaged in the incident.
House sustains major damage
The accident caused extensive destruction to the residential property. The house wall, windows, doors and compound structure suffered damage due to the heavy impact of the lorry and the falling cement blocks.
In addition, the iron gate, light pole, wooden roof rafters, roof tiles, DTH antenna, water pipe and kitchen sheet were also damaged during the mishap. Residents in the area rushed to the spot after hearing a loud noise caused by the crash.
According to the complaint filed in connection with the incident, the total loss caused to the property is estimated at around Rs 2.50 lakh.
Fortunately, no members of the family sustained injuries in the incident despite the severe damage caused to the house premises.
Driver escapes with minor injuries
The goods lorry involved in the accident was also damaged after overturning beside the house compound. The driver sustained minor injuries and was provided medical attention.
Locals and police personnel later shifted the damaged vehicle from the spot and cleared the road to restore traffic movement in the area.
Police sources said preliminary investigation is underway to determine the exact reason behind the accident. Suspected overspeeding or loss of control may have led to the mishap, officials added.
Case registered
A case has been registered at the traffic police station regarding the accident. Police have begun further investigation into the incident.
Residents in the locality have expressed concern over frequent movement of heavy vehicles along the narrow stretch of the BC Road–Polali road and urged authorities to implement additional safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
