According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the coastal belt has been placed under a red alert on August 18, forecasting very heavy rainfall. Orange alerts are in place for August 17, 19, and 20, while yellow alerts cover August 21 and 22. The IMD also warned of strong winds in the Arabian Sea reaching up to 60 kmph between August 16 and 19, cautioning fishermen against venturing into the waters. On August 16, Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 27.6°C and a minimum of 23.1°C.
In Subrahmanya and surrounding areas, torrential rain caused water levels in the Gundya stream to rise, inundating farmlands and flooding homes along the Ichlampady-Mandak stream in Kadaba taluk. Several families were shifted to safer locations as a precaution. Heavy rain in the foothills of the Western Ghats also led to overflowing streams in Beltangady and Sullia taluks.
Udupi district reported moderate rainfall, with IMD placing it under an orange alert for August 17, followed by red alerts on August 18 and 19. Authorities have urged residents, tourists, and fishermen to stay away from rivers, beaches, and other water bodies during this high-risk period.
