Mangaluru: With the arrival of the monsoon, Niasha Ayurveda has launched its annual Karkitaka Chikitsa programme — a seasonal Ayurvedic therapy designed to restore internal balance and detoxify the body during the most vulnerable time of the year. The programme will be available throughout July and August 2025.
Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Karkitakam (mid-July to mid-August), this ancient tradition is believed to be the ideal time to strengthen immunity, cleanse toxins, and prepare the body for the rest of the year. At Niasha Ayurveda, the programme is not only a physical therapy but also a journey toward mental clarity and emotional equilibrium.
What is Karkitaka Chikitsa?
Karkitaka Chikitsa, also known as monsoon therapy, is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic seasonal regimens. During this period, the three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — tend to become imbalanced due to the high humidity and weakened digestive fire (Agni). This makes the season ideal for corrective treatments and rejuvenation.
“Karkitaka Chikitsa helps align the body with nature’s cycles. It’s the best time to detoxify and boost natural immunity, especially in our tropical climate,” said an Ayurvedic expert at Niasha.
Treatments Offered
Niasha’s programme combines a wide range of traditional therapies under the guidance of trained Ayurvedic physicians and therapists:
-
Abhyanga: Warm herbal oil massage to stimulate circulation and remove toxins.
Swedana: Herbal steam therapy for opening up body channels and relieving muscle tension.
Virechana: A gentle purgation therapy to clear excess Pitta and accumulated toxins.
Nasya: Nasal cleansing to improve respiratory health and mental clarity.
The treatments are further customised based on each individual’s constitution (Prakriti), lifestyle, and specific health conditions.
Karkitaka Kanji – Healing in a bowl
An important element of the therapy is Karkitaka Kanji, a herbal rice gruel made with digestive herbs. Prepared fresh every day at the Niasha centre, it helps rekindle digestive fire, cleanses the body’s internal pathways, and acts as a nourishing food during the detox process.
Patients undergoing therapy are served the Kanji as part of the Ayurvedic diet, while others can purchase it separately as a take-home health food.
Herbal Rejuvenators & Rasayanas
To complement detoxification, Niasha also integrates Rasayana chikitsa — rejuvenating herbal formulations that promote tissue regeneration, energy, skin health, and longevity. These in-house formulations are designed using time-tested Ayurvedic principles and are aimed at long-term wellness.
