Mangaluru: Karnataka is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the next four days due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In view of the expected increase in rainfall intensity, the IMD has issued red, orange and yellow alerts for several districts across the coastal, north interior and south interior regions of Karnataka.
Heavy rain forecast across several districts
Several districts, including Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Koppal, Ballari, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Tumakuru, are likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
The weather system is expected to bring varying degrees of rainfall across the state, with the coastal districts likely to experience particularly intense spells on September 24.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds.
Yellow alert on September 22
For September 22, a yellow alert has been issued for Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Heavy rainfall is likely in these districts, and people have been advised to exercise caution while travelling and during periods of intense weather.
Orange alert on September 23
The rainfall intensity is expected to increase on September 23.
An orange alert has been issued for Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada districts, where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been forecast.
A yellow alert has also been issued for Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Bagalkot, Vijayanagara, Uttara Kannada, Chitradurga and Hassan districts.
The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds could affect road travel and normal activities in some areas.
Red alert for coastal districts on September 24
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have been placed under a red alert for September 24, with the IMD forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts.
An orange alert has been issued for Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada.
Dharwad, Gadag, Koppal, Raichur, Tumakuru, Mandya and Mysuru have been placed under a yellow alert for the day.
The red alert indicates the possibility of very intense rainfall, and residents in areas prone to flooding, waterlogging and landslides are expected to take appropriate precautions.
Fishermen advised to exercise caution
The IMD has advised the public to remain cautious in view of the forecast for heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Fishermen along the coastal region have also been advised to take necessary precautions due to the prevailing weather conditions.
People in coastal districts are advised to monitor official weather updates and follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly as the rainfall intensity is expected to peak around September 24.
