Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning across several parts of Karnataka, offering partial relief from the prevailing heat conditions.
According to the latest weather bulletin, coastal and Malnad districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, along with interior regions including Belagavi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Hassan, are likely to receive scattered light showers on Thursday, April 16.
Hot and humid conditions to continue
Despite the expected rainfall, the IMD has cautioned that hot and humid weather will persist in Dakshina Kannada over the next two days starting April 16. The coastal belt has been experiencing a steady rise in temperatures, making conditions increasingly uncomfortable for residents.
On Wednesday morning, parts of the district witnessed cloudy skies, raising hopes of rain. However, the weather soon turned oppressive, with intense heat combined with high humidity levels dominating the day.
Meteorologists indicate that such conditions are typical during pre-monsoon transitions, where intermittent rainfall does little to offset the overall heat stress, especially in coastal regions.
Temperature remains above normal
Temperature data recorded in Mangaluru reflects the ongoing trend of above-average heat. The maximum temperature on Wednesday reached 34.8°C, which is 0.5°C higher than the seasonal norm. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature stood at 27°C, marking a significant increase of 2.2°C above average.
These elevated temperatures, coupled with moisture-laden coastal air, have contributed to the sultry conditions being experienced across the region.
Relief likely but limited
While light showers may bring temporary respite, experts suggest that a sustained drop in temperatures is unlikely in the immediate future. The rainfall is expected to be scattered and short-lived, primarily driven by localised atmospheric conditions.
Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related discomfort, including staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.
Conclusion
The IMD’s forecast of light rain offers some relief to Karnataka’s coastal and interior districts, but persistent humidity and above-normal temperatures are likely to continue affecting daily life in Mangaluru and surrounding areas. A more significant and lasting change in weather conditions is expected only with the gradual approach of the monsoon season.
