Eminent Konkani poet Marian Paul Rodrigues, affectionately known as M P Rodrigues, passed away on January 6 in the United States at the age of 78. Born on July 6, 1946, in Kaudur village near Gurpur, Rodrigues was deeply connected to his agricultural roots, which often inspired his work.
Renowned for his modern poetic style, Rodrigues moved beyond personal themes to explore the intricacies of social life in his writings. Influenced by Louis Mascarenhas, his poetry resonated with the beauty of nature and societal observations.
An economics graduate, Rodrigues spent over 30 years in Dubai before returning to his literary pursuits. He was celebrated with the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Award for his poetry collection Rumddi Fulam and received the prestigious Kavita Trust’s Mathias Family Poetry Award in 2015. His notable works also include Rasthya Degechim Fulam, another acclaimed collection of poems.
In addition to his literary achievements, Rodrigues was a talented singer and an active participant in radio programs. He credited much of his artistic journey to mentors Sirivanth, Fr Sila Minez, and Fr J S T Rodrigues.
Rodrigues’ funeral is scheduled to take place in Mangaluru, with detailed arrangements awaited. His passing marks the end of a remarkable era in Konkani literature, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations.
