Mangaluru: Mangalore University has constituted a new committee to investigate alleged irregularities in PhD admissions in the Department of Social Work for the academic years 2022–23 and 2023–24. The decision follows growing concerns over unresolved issues and internal conflicts within the department that are reportedly affecting students and research scholars.

Although the university syndicate had earlier ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter, that investigation yielded no concrete results. With increasing pressure from students and faculty, the syndicate has now set up a fresh committee, comprising four syndicate members and the registrar (evaluation), to conduct a thorough re-investigation.

Syndicate member Raghuraj confirmed the development, stating that the goal is to bring finality to the matter and ensure that strict disciplinary action is taken if wrongdoing is found. “The ongoing uncertainty has been causing distress to PhD scholars. If any irregularities are confirmed, appropriate action will follow,” he said.

Another syndicate member pointed out that internal disputes among permanent faculty have negatively impacted the academic environment. “This department has consistently attracted good admissions and holds a strong reputation. It’s important that the credibility is restored and any person responsible is held accountable,” the member added.

The issue gained attention after a faculty member lodged a formal complaint regarding the 2023–24 PhD admission process with the governor, which was later flagged by the higher education department.
