Mangaluru: Mangalore University has addressed a long-standing request by distributing hard copies of marks cards for students who graduated under the National Education Policy-2020. Previously issued only in digital format, the university gained special approval from the higher education department, supported by Assembly Speaker UT Khader, to take this step.
During its first General Academic Council meeting on Friday, Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma and Registrar (Evaluation) H Devendrappa confirmed the move. The university has already dispatched physical marks cards to affiliated colleges. Out of over 18,000 undergraduate students, around 13,517 received printed copies. For postgraduate courses, 1,637 physical marks cards were released.
Approximately 5,000 UG students are still awaiting their mark sheets due to data discrepancies from UUCMS. Dharma assured that the university is working quickly to resolve these issues. He emphasized that students won’t be charged for the printed documents. Many graduates had complained about difficulties in job applications and overseas admissions due to digital-only mark sheets.
The council also reviewed updated course syllabi, granted autonomous status to Mahatma Gandhi College, Udupi, and revised allowances for university officials. The sitting fee for syndicate members was raised from ₹5,000 to ₹8,000, given the institution’s financial constraints.
Meanwhile, an internal investigation is underway regarding the diversion of ₹8.5 crore meant for developing the Belapu PG centre. The funds were allegedly used for unrelated facilities, violating government directives. Dharma noted that ₹38.3 crore has already been spent, with ₹12 crore more needed. Plans include launching innovative courses like marine and coastal security.
