In an effort to combat the growing issue of drug use, Mangaluru City Police are set to implement standardised protocols across all colleges under the Commissionerate’s jurisdiction. To initiate the campaign, police officials have already begun interacting with institutions to raise awareness.

Final plans will be discussed during a meeting with college authorities. Coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse on June 26, an awareness drive will also be conducted.

Commissioner of Police, Sudheer Kumar Reddy, noted the heightened risk of substance abuse in educational spaces and emphasised the department’s goal of total elimination. Each college will soon establish dedicated anti-drug committees to maintain regular vigilance. Institutions that proactively address the issue will also provide psychological support where necessary.

Internal college panels will carry out surprise drug tests monthly, with at least 50 colleges to be covered in the next three months. This effort will see coordination between police, parents, and the Health Department. Students found using drugs will be viewed as victims, with priority given to counselling and rehabilitation. Religious leaders will also be involved to help disseminate awareness.

The campaign will extend to off-campus housing such as private hostels and PGs. A Deputy Superintendent of Police will oversee all awareness and enforcement actions in educational sectors.

To disrupt the drug supply, officers have been instructed to act decisively, ensuring strict legal action under the NDPS Act against major offenders.
