Moti Mahal, Mangaluru’s first business-class hotel, is set to shut its doors following a decades-long land dispute. As per a Supreme Court ruling, the hotel must vacate the premises and hand it over in its existing condition to the rightful landowners by the end of April, along with a compensation payment of ₹3 crore.
The land, located beside Milagres Church in Hampankatta, belongs to St. Anthony’s Old Age Home in Jeppu. The dispute, fought between the church’s management and the hotel’s owners, has now ended in favour of the church authorities.
Founded in 1966 by business magnate A.J. Shetty, Moti Mahal was a pioneer in Mangaluru’s hospitality sector. It introduced luxury facilities such as a swimming pool and gym, and quickly became a household name.
Home to well-known spots like the Mangala Multi-Cuisine Restaurant, Madhuvan Veg, Mehfil Bar, Taichin Chinese, and Moti Sweets, the hotel also boasted a banquet hall for 1,000 guests and 90 well-appointed rooms. The “Sheetal” pool and its fine-dining options made it a preferred venue for weddings, business events, and family celebrations.
For nearly sixty years, Moti Mahal stood as a symbol of the city’s modernization, offering elegance and convenience in the heart of Hampankatta. Its imminent closure marks the end of a cherished chapter in Mangaluru’s urban and cultural history.
