Mangaluru is on the brink of a major upgrade to its sports infrastructure with the nearing completion of a state-of-the-art indoor stadium near Urwa Market. Designed to meet national standards for shuttle badminton and kabaddi, the facility is expected to be ready within the next two months. Once inaugurated, the stadium will provide the city with the capacity to host national-level pro-kabaddi and shuttle badminton tournaments.

The Rs 33 crore indoor stadium, developed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), will feature six courts on the ground floor and another five on the upper floor. MSCL Managing Director Raju K. mentioned that the venue is designed to be versatile, with both floors being convertible between badminton and kabaddi courts. Mats will be laid out for kabaddi matches, and the courts will serve as shuttle badminton facilities otherwise.

In addition to hosting tournaments, the complex will provide specialized training for regional athletes in both sports. It is equipped with modern amenities such as comfortable seating for spectators, a sports club with a café, and commercial spaces to support its financial sustainability. Parking facilities are also part of the design.

Although the MSCL had initially planned to hand over the complex by the end of this month, some work remains, and the facility is unlikely to be ready in time for the State Games 2025, scheduled for January 17 to 23 in Mangaluru and Udupi. Upon completion, the indoor stadium will be managed by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports.
