Mangalore University faces allegations of malpractice in the 2023-24 PhD admission process for social work, as faculty members petitioned Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot for intervention. The controversy revolves around claims of procedural violations by the admission committee chairman, allegedly supported by the Registrar Evaluation.
According to the complaint, the chairman bypassed university protocols by organizing exams independently, with inputs from private institutions, while excluding the mandated university committee. The admission list was reportedly posted on the university website without essential approvals or signatures from key officials, including the dean of faculty of arts and the registrar.
Further accusations suggest that the chairman replaced the official question paper prepared by the admission committee with an unauthorized version, conducted by affiliated college faculty. These irregularities led to a demand to annul the unapproved PhD admission list.
The chairman of the social work department accused the selection committee head of collecting fees, declaring candidates as PhD scholars, and assigning them research spaces without approval. Additionally, it is alleged that efforts were made to accommodate candidates from non-UGC-approved programs.
Despite complaints to university Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma and the administration six months ago, no action was taken. Governor Gehlot, who also serves as the university chancellor, has now been approached for intervention.
VC PL Dharma confirmed that a committee has completed its inquiry and has set a January 6 deadline for responses. Failure to provide satisfactory answers may result in disciplinary action.
