Bantwal: A pillion rider was killed and a scooter rider critically injured after a tipper truck allegedly travelling at high speed collided with their two-wheeler at N G Circle in B C Road on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Yashwanth Kulal, while the injured scooter rider has been identified as Dayananda. The accident occurred at around 6.30 pm when the two were travelling towards Dharmasthala from Mangaluru.

Tipper allegedly rams into scooter

According to the police, Dayananda and Yashwanth were travelling on a scooter bearing registration number KA-70-H-5059.

At the same time, a tipper truck bearing registration number KA-19-AF-8073 was travelling from Kalladka towards Loretto. The vehicle was allegedly being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner by 33-year-old Salman Farooq, a resident of Pallamajalu in Bantwal.

Police said the tipper allegedly rammed into the scooter at N G Circle. The impact left both occupants of the two-wheeler seriously injured.

The circumstances of the collision are being examined as part of the police investigation.

Yashwanth dies, Dayananda in ICU

Following the accident, both victims were rushed to Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for emergency treatment.

Yashwanth Kulal had sustained severe injuries in the collision. Despite efforts to save him, doctors later declared him dead at the hospital.

Dayananda, who was also seriously injured, continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). His condition is being closely monitored by doctors.

The accident resulted in a tragic loss of life and left another person battling serious injuries.

Driver taken into custody

Following the incident, Bantwal Traffic police took tipper driver Salman Farooq into custody.

A case has been registered in connection with the accident under Sections 281, 125(a) and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case has been registered under Crime No. 99/2026.

The provisions invoked relate to alleged rash or negligent driving, causing hurt or grievous hurt by a rash or negligent act, and causing death by negligence.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision.

Investigation under way

The police are examining the sequence of events surrounding the crash, including the movement of both vehicles and the alleged manner in which the tipper truck was being driven.

The accident occurred during the evening hours at N G Circle, a busy road junction in B C Road. Investigators are expected to gather further details as part of the case.

The accused driver has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are under way.

The incident once again highlights the risks faced by two-wheeler riders when sharing busy roads with heavy commercial vehicles. Speeding and negligent driving can have serious consequences, particularly at busy junctions and along routes carrying heavy traffic.

As the investigation continues, police will determine the circumstances and responsibility for the fatal collision based on the evidence collected.
