Mangaluru: The Department of Counselling at St Aloysius Pre-University College, in collaboration with the Buddies, hosted a heart-warming and inclusive programme titled ‘Together We Belong’, celebrating neuro-divergent children and reinforcing the college’s commitment to empathy, dignity and belonging.
Warm welcome and creative activities mark the beginning
Children arrived with their parents and were warmly received by the organising team. Each child was paired with a trained Buddy who offered gentle guidance and companionship throughout the programme. The morning began with a creative activity where children decorated Christmas stockings with colourful craft materials, helping them settle comfortably into the festive atmosphere.
A prayer song set a serene tone, followed by a welcome address from Ms Sangeeta M Sequeira of the Counselling Department, who emphasised the need to recognise every child’s unique gifts and strengths.
Leaders and parents share reflections on inclusion
In his message, Rev. Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, Principal, narrated the story of The Cracked Pot, reminding everyone that differences are not limitations, but unique purposes that enrich the world.
Parent representatives also shared heartfelt thoughts.
- Ms Meena Noronha expressed gratitude to the college and reminded parents that every child is a “precious treasure from heaven.”
- Dr Kanthini, attending for the first time, spoke about the joys and challenges of raising a neuro-divergent child, stressing the importance of patience, understanding and celebrating blessings.
The presence of Rev. Fr Anthony Derrick, Campus Minister, added grace to the event and strengthened the spirit of unity.
Music, dance and joyful moments bring the community together
The atmosphere soon turned lively with a Christmas medley and a dance performance by the college choir and the Buddies, filling the hall with festive cheer. Interactive games conducted by the Buddies brought laughter, enthusiasm and shared joy.
A delightful impromptu dance session saw children, parents, staff and volunteers celebrating together as one community.
A particularly touching moment was the soulful solo performance by Ms Avni, a special child, who confidently sang a Christmas carol to warm applause.
A learning experience for the Buddies
Throughout the event, the Buddies gained meaningful, hands-on experience in supporting neuro-divergent children. Their empathy, patience and growing awareness were strengthened through genuine interactions, making the initiative mutually enriching.
The arrival of Santa Claus added magic to the celebration, as each child received a personalised gift. The programme was compered by Ms Srusty Kamath of II PU.
A shared meal concludes a memorable day
The event ended with a fellowship meal shared by children, parents, staff and volunteers — a fitting conclusion to a day that reflected warmth, belonging and genuine human connection.
The programme was led by the dedicated Counselling Department team: Ms Sangeeta Sequeira, Ms Bakyalakshmi, Sr Valsa C. A., Ms Sarah Crasta (Event Coordinator) and Mr Prathik Rai, whose efforts created an atmosphere of care and celebration.
‘Together We Belong’ stood as a powerful reminder that every child deserves to be seen, supported and celebrated, affirming St Aloysius PU College’s commitment to an inclusive, compassionate campus.
