Sullia: Defying poverty, personal loss and challenging circumstances, Sushmitha, a young woman from the remote village of Aranthodu in Sullia taluk, has realised her dream of joining the Border Security Force (BSF). Her success has brought pride and inspiration to the entire region.
Childhood marked by struggle
Sushmitha is the elder daughter of late Nagappa Gowda M A and Janaki, residents of Meladtale, Bedrupane in Aranthodu. Her parents worked as daily wage labourers to educate her and her younger sister Nishmitha. The family’s struggles deepened when Sushmitha lost her father four years ago while she was in her final year of graduation.
Taking on family responsibilities, she completed her degree and started working at a tiles shop to support her household and her sister’s studies, all while nurturing her aspiration to serve the nation.
Pursuit of a dream career
Despite working a private job, Sushmitha continued preparing for various recruitment examinations, including police, military and forest guard posts. Her relentless efforts bore fruit when she cleared the SSC-GD exam and earned a place in the BSF, fulfilling her long-cherished ambition of donning the uniform.
Life in a remote village
Bedrupane, where Sushmitha hails from, is a remote settlement of around 25 families, located about 25 km from the taluk centre. The area faces multiple hardships—lack of proper roads, unstable electricity and limited mobile network coverage.
Adding to the difficulties, residents live under the constant threat of wild animals, including elephants and wild boars. Sushmitha recalled a terrifying moment when she encountered an elephant on her way home and narrowly escaped by speeding away on her two-wheeler.
Looking to the future
Expressing happiness at her achievement, Sushmitha said, “Getting a job requires continuous study and effort. That dedication helped me succeed. My dream of joining the Indian armed forces has finally come true. If given the opportunity, I aspire to rise to higher ranks in the service.”
Conclusion
Sushmitha’s story stands as a powerful example of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. Her achievement not only brings pride to Sullia taluk but also inspires countless young people from rural areas to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
