Mangaluru: The Kavoor police have arrested three young men on charges of consuming narcotic substances in a public place near Kavoor Junction. The arrests were made late Thursday night during routine police rounds.

Accused identified

The arrested accused have been identified as:

  • M Sirajuddin alias MS Shaakir (25), a resident of Ullal,

  • Abdul Khader Adeef alias Adi (18), a resident of KC Road, and

  • Sahul Ameed Safwan (28), a resident of Kavoor.

  • According to police, the trio was caught red-handed while allegedly consuming narcotics at around 10 pm near Kavoor Junction.

    Swift police action

    Sub-inspector Mallikarjun Biradar, who was on patrol duty, noticed suspicious activity and confronted the three men. Upon questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to having consumed narcotics.

    They were immediately taken into custody with the assistance of the police staff present at the spot. The accused were then produced before the medical officer of a private hospital for examination to confirm narcotic consumption.

    Ongoing crackdown on drug use

    Police sources said that the arrests form part of a wider crackdown on drug consumption and trafficking in and around Mangaluru. Law enforcement has intensified patrolling in public places following several recent incidents linked to drug abuse among youth.

    Officials stressed that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found consuming or peddling narcotics. Awareness campaigns are also being stepped up to discourage youth from falling prey to substance abuse.
