Mangaluru: Tulu cinema achieved a historic milestone with the release of its 150th film, Netterekere, on 29 August at Big Cinemas, Mangaluru. Directed by Swaraj Shetty under the banner of Astra Production and produced by Lanchulal K S, the film’s launch event was marked by grandeur, nostalgia and pride for the industry’s journey.
The function began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by veteran theatre director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail, who wished the team great success.
Diverse subjects gaining ground in Tulu cinema
At the event, producer Prakash Pandeshwar observed that Tulu cinema was expanding beyond its comic roots.
“So far, most Tulu films were comedies, but now diverse subjects are being explored. I wish this film receives everyone’s support,” he said.
Social activist Kirik Keerthi, who flew in specially to watch the film after viewing its trailer, added,
“I travelled all the way to Mangaluru just to watch this film. I hope it runs for over 150 days.”
Director Swaraj Shetty remarked,
“Change is necessary in Tulu cinema, and Netterekere is a step in that direction. I seek the blessings and support of the entire Tulu Nadu.”
Industry and cultural figures attend
The grand premiere was attended by Tulu Film Producers Association president R Dhanaraj, actors Prithvi Ambar, Ismail Moodushedde, Lakshman Kundar, Kishore Shetty, Santosh Shetty, A K Vijay Kokila, senior journalist Jagannath Shetty Bala, and several others from the film and media fraternity. The programme was hosted by Yatheesh Poojary, who also served as the film’s executive producer.

Netterekere has been shot in Chelyaru, Mulki and Kinnigoli, with Swaraj Shetty taking charge of the story, dialogues, direction, and also playing the lead role. Dishali Poojary stars as the female lead, while veteran multilingual actor Suman Talwar and producer Lanchulal K S appear in special roles.
The ensemble cast features Yuvaraj Shetty, Pushparaj Bolluru, Anil Uppala, Bhavya Poojary, Prithvin Polali, Utsav Vamanjoor, Neeth Poojary, Vijay Maiya, Chandrashekar Siddakatte, Manish Shetty Upir, Namith Kiran, Sunitha, Vinayak Jappu, Bhagavan and Keerthan Mulki.
