Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada: Tulu theatre veteran Devadas Kapikad expressed concern over the declining state of theatre, highlighting unprecedented challenges in attracting audiences. Speaking at a press conference, Kapikad, a senior member of the Tulu Theatre Artists’ Union, stated that in his 38-year career, he had never seen such a situation.

Veteran’s concern over dwindling audience

Kapikad remarked that earlier, plays would draw as many as 5,000 people, creating a vibrant cultural experience. “If 5,000 people were present for a play, organisers would even purchase a generator at once,” he said, emphasising the enthusiasm and support theatre once enjoyed. However, recent trends have shown a sharp decline in audience numbers, leaving organisers unsure whether to proceed with performances.

He added that this has caused significant confusion among theatre enthusiasts and organisers alike, leading to financial strain and questions about the sustainability of live performances.

Appeal for public representatives’ support

Kapikad called upon elected representatives and cultural authorities to step forward and support the Tulu theatre industry. “The name of Tulu theatre is being hit hard, and our people’s representatives should respond to this,” he said, stressing that timely intervention could revive interest and protect the rich heritage of Tulu drama.

Need for revival efforts

Cultural experts believe that efforts such as innovative productions, increased publicity, and inclusion of contemporary themes could help attract younger audiences. Additionally, government and community support through grants, subsidies, and promotions may play a key role in reviving the theatre scene.

Conclusion

Tulu theatre, a cornerstone of coastal Karnataka’s cultural identity, faces an uncertain future unless immediate measures are taken to restore its popularity. Artists like Kapikad continue to raise their voices, hoping for meaningful action to preserve this unique tradition.
