The construction of the new Udupi District Hospital building, which is being upgraded from a 124-bed to a 250-bed capacity, is almost complete, with only finishing work left. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that 90% of the civil work has been finished, and efforts are underway to install fire safety systems, medical gas pipelines, electrification, water supply, and sanitation. The government is also preparing to decide on the procurement of necessary medical equipment.

In response to a query from Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna during the ongoing legislature session, the minister explained that the health department approved the proposal for the hospital’s upgrade on November 13, 2020. The project, estimated at Rs 115 crore, was assigned to a contractor on September 8, 2021. However, additional infrastructure work, including road development, a sewage treatment plant (STP), and landscaping, is still pending.

The MLA also inquired about facilities for patients’ bystanders in the new building. The minister clarified that such accommodations are not provided as per the government’s policy. Regarding staffing, including doctors and nurses, the minister assured that the proposal is under consideration, and the hospital will be operational once construction is completed.
