Mangaluru: The Mangaluru North Police have registered a case against an undertrial prisoner for allegedly attempting to hand over two SIM cards to another accused who was in police custody within the court premises. Alert police personnel on duty noticed the act and intercepted it before the prohibited items could be passed.
The incident came to light after a complaint was lodged by a police head constable who was escorting accused persons to and from court hearings. Police have initiated legal proceedings against the undertrial for allegedly attempting to provide unauthorised items to a person in custody.
Incident occurred after court proceedings
According to the police complaint, head constable Yatheesh A of Konaje Police Station, along with other police personnel, had escorted accused persons involved in multiple criminal cases to the respective courts for scheduled hearings.
The accused were facing charges under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 417, 450, 392, 397, 109, 120(B), 342, 411, 414, 34 and 75, as well as Sections 457, 380 and 34 in another case registered at Konaje Police Station.
After the court proceedings concluded, the police team was preparing to escort the accused back to the district prison.
Attempt to pass SIM cards foiled
At that stage, another undertrial prisoner, identified as Hasanabba alias Achchu, allegedly attempted to secretly hand over two SIM cards to Mohammed Rizwan, who was in police custody.
Police personnel, including the complainant head constable and the accompanying police constable, noticed the alleged attempt and immediately intervened.
The officers prevented the SIM cards from being passed to the accused and secured the prohibited items before they could be used.
Police register case
Based on the complaint filed by head constable Yatheesh A, the Mangaluru North Police have registered a case against Hasanabba alias Achchu.
Police have initiated legal action for allegedly attempting to supply prohibited items to an accused while he was in police custody.
Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether there was any larger plan behind the attempt to pass the SIM cards inside the court premises.
Authorities are also expected to examine whether any additional persons were involved in facilitating the alleged act.
The incident highlights the vigilance of escort personnel, whose timely intervention prevented prohibited communication devices from reaching an accused in custody.
