The Mysuru district food and civil supplies department has flagged 69,845 Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration card holders as ineligible. This discovery follows an intensive verification drive aimed at ensuring that only those who truly need assistance receive benefits.
Currently, Mysuru has distributed 6.4 lakh BPL cards. Of these, 69,856 were found to exceed the income threshold of Rs 1.2 lakh per annum, making them ineligible for BPL status. The department has previously canceled 12,000 BPL cards in the past year for similar reasons.
The verification process involved checking declared income against income tax records. The next step will involve door-to-door verification to confirm these findings. Those confirmed ineligible will be shifted to Above Poverty Line (APL) status.
Mysuru district currently has 6,44,296 BPL card holders and 1,11,043 APL card holders. The highest number of ineligible card holders was found in Mysuru taluk.
M Dasaiah, former president of PACCS, emphasized the need to prioritize genuine beneficiaries. Joint Director Kumuda confirmed that the department’s efforts will continue to ensure accurate distribution of benefits.
