Raichur: The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a 10-day padayatra from Raichur to Ballari from September 1 to September 10, seeking to step up its campaign against the Congress government in the state. The march, expected to cover around 190–200 km, will also focus on the party’s demand for the resignation of Planning and Statistics Minister B Nagendra.

BJP state president B Y Vijayendra announced the programme on Tuesday, saying the padayatra would highlight what the party describes as the failures of the Congress government and raise issues affecting people in northern Karnataka.

The proposed march will pass through several parts of the region, including Lingasugur, Maski, Sindhanur and Siruguppa before reaching Ballari. The BJP’s NDA ally, the Janata Dal (Secular), is also supporting the programme, adding a broader opposition dimension to the mobilisation.

Padayatra to begin on September 1

The BJP’s 10-day march is scheduled to begin in Raichur on September 1 and conclude in Ballari on September 10.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi is expected to inaugurate the padayatra at the beginning of the programme. Senior BJP and JD(S) leaders are also expected to participate, with Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy scheduled to attend the concluding rally in Ballari along with other senior leaders.

The march is expected to cover approximately 190–200 km, depending on the final route and programme. The proposed route will take the BJP through several constituencies in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, allowing party leaders to interact with local residents and raise issues concerning agriculture, employment and development.

The BJP intends to use the padayatra not merely as a political march but as a vehicle to mobilise its cadre and supporters in a region that has faced recurring concerns over drought, agricultural distress and development.

BJP targets Congress government

The announcement comes amid an increasingly confrontational phase between the BJP and the Congress government in Karnataka.

Vijayendra has accused the government led by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar of failing to address several issues facing the state. He has alleged that the government has not provided adequate relief to farmers affected by drought and has failed to create sufficient employment opportunities for young people.

The BJP leader has also criticised what he described as the government’s priorities, alleging that the Chief Minister and government are giving greater attention to real estate-related projects instead of issues concerning farmers, poorer sections and unemployed youth.

These allegations are part of the BJP’s broader political campaign against the Congress administration. The Congress government has faced sustained criticism from the Opposition over a number of policy and administrative issues, while the ruling party has defended its record and accused the BJP of disrupting legislative proceedings.

Demand for B Nagendra’s resignation

One of the central issues behind the proposed padayatra is the BJP’s demand for the resignation of Planning and Statistics Minister B Nagendra.

The demand has been linked to the alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. The issue has become a major political flashpoint, particularly in northern Karnataka and among communities represented by the Scheduled Tribes.

The BJP has intensified its demand for Nagendra’s resignation and plans to use the padayatra to keep the issue in the public spotlight.

The march follows protests by BJP legislators during the recent legislature session, where the Opposition demanded that the minister step down.

According to the BJP, the padayatra will provide an opportunity to take the issue directly to people in the districts through which the march passes.

Opposition raises drought and farmer concerns

The BJP has said drought and agricultural distress will be among the issues raised during the 10-day march.

Northern Karnataka has traditionally been vulnerable to fluctuations in rainfall, making farming communities particularly dependent on timely government assistance during periods of water scarcity.

Vijayendra alleged that the Congress government had failed to provide adequate relief to farmers facing difficulties.

The BJP has also said the government has not done enough to generate employment opportunities for young people.

By taking the campaign to rural and semi-urban areas, the party is expected to focus on local concerns and attempt to build public pressure on the government.

The march could therefore become an important platform for the Opposition to consolidate its campaign around issues extending beyond the Valmiki Corporation controversy.

BJP cites legislative session controversies

The padayatra announcement came shortly after the Karnataka legislature session was cut short amid protests by Opposition members.

The BJP has alleged that the government avoided discussion on several contentious issues, including drought, problems affecting northern Karnataka, alleged Karnataka Public Service Commission irregularities, the NICE project and protests surrounding the proposed Bidadi township.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka accused the Congress government of cutting short the session after the BJP announced a day-and-night protest demanding Nagendra’s resignation.

The BJP has also criticised the government for passing several Bills without what it considers adequate discussion. Ashoka said the party had collected documents relating to several issues and was prepared to raise them in the legislature.

The Congress government has rejected the Opposition’s characterisation of its handling of the legislature and has accused the BJP of disrupting proceedings.

Route to cover key northern Karnataka areas

The proposed route is politically significant because it takes the BJP through several areas of northern Karnataka.

The march will pass through Lingasugur, Maski, Sindhanur and Siruguppa before reaching Ballari. These areas have strong agricultural links and include communities for whom drought, irrigation, employment and rural development are important political concerns.

The route is also relevant to the BJP’s campaign against Nagendra, who represents Ballari Rural and has been at the centre of the party’s demands over the alleged Valmiki Corporation irregularities.

By ending the padayatra in Ballari, the BJP intends to give the campaign a strong political culmination.

The concluding programme is expected to draw senior leaders from both the BJP and JD(S), providing an opportunity for the Opposition alliance to project a united front against the Congress government.

JD(S) extends support

The participation of the JD(S) adds another dimension to the BJP’s planned mobilisation.

Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra said the party’s NDA alliance partner would support the padayatra. The participation is expected to strengthen coordination between the two parties at a time when the Opposition is seeking to put greater political pressure on the Congress government.

The alliance’s involvement could also help the BJP reach a wider network of Opposition supporters in the districts along the proposed route.

However, the extent of JD(S) participation at different stages of the march will become clearer as the programme progresses.
