Even as Karnataka grapples with the recent loss of several mothers after Caesarean deliveries in Ballari, a fresh concern has surfaced in Raichur district. Over the past two months, 19 lactating mothers have tragically died, raising alarm among health authorities.
According to Dr. Surendra Babu, Raichur’s District Health Officer (DHO), eight fatalities occurred at RIMS Hospital, while one death each was recorded in government facilities at Sindhanur and Devdurg taluks. The causes of death include severe bleeding (haemorrhage) and cardiac arrests, highlighting critical gaps in maternal healthcare.
A team of medical experts from the Kalaburagi health department has initiated a detailed investigation into these incidents. Dr. Babu assured that a comprehensive report will soon be shared with the state government, which could provide insights into the underlying issues and suggest corrective measures.
This wave of maternal deaths follows the Ballari tragedy, where several women died post-Caesarean surgeries last month, further spotlighting the fragile state of healthcare in the region. The situation calls for urgent attention to prevent such avoidable tragedies and safeguard maternal health.
Efforts to ensure timely intervention, better monitoring during postnatal care, and improved facilities in rural hospitals are crucial to addressing these recurring challenges. Authorities are under pressure to deliver solutions that prioritize the health and safety of mothers.
