Puttur: A political confrontation has escalated in Puttur after former MLA Ashok Kumar Rai alleged that former MLA Sanjeev Mathandur had accepted ₹2 lakh each from 47 individuals for illegal land sanctions related to the Mahalingeshwara Temple issue. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed the allegations and issued a counter-challenge to produce proof.
BJP Counters Allegations
BJP Puttur Rural Mandal President Dayanand Ujiremar termed the allegations “baseless and politically motivated,” urging Rai to publicly swear that no bribes were taken during the temple land sanction process.
“If he has any dignity, the MLA should take an oath to prove his claims. Without evidence, such accusations only mislead the people,” Ujiremar said.
Call for Evidence
Ujiremar demanded that Rai bring forward the 47 individuals who allegedly paid the bribes, promising that BJP leaders would present former MLAs and committee members involved in land allocation for a joint review at a place and time of Rai’s choice.
BJP Stresses Transparency in Land Allotments
BJP leaders asserted that land allotments during Mathandur’s tenure, except during the COVID-19 lockdown phase, were carried out transparently and without discrimination on caste or religious grounds.
Opposition’s Role Questioned
“As a responsible opposition party, BJP will continue to question any false claims made to tarnish reputations,” Ujiremar said, adding that the party expects Rai to respond to the challenge immediately.
Conclusion
The controversy has intensified political tension in Puttur, with BJP pressing for evidence while the allegations continue to stir public debate.
